You are having a typical good natured day when all of a sudden you encounter someone who is not trying to make your life miserable but is just preoccupied with an overload of his/her own frustrations and needs.  The typical response is to snap back with a remark that is in keeping

with the same mood.

If you prefer your own more peaceful attitude, you might consider this procedure.  First, take a deep breath or do something that guards against making the situation worse.  The next procedure is to listen attentively without interruption.  Let go of the need to direct the discussion.

Empathize is next.  Make a genuine effort to see the situation from the other person’s point of view.  Then if there is anything at all that you agree with, it is wise to comment on it and say you are going to think about it.

Let go of the need to control the other person or bring him/her to your way of thinking.

Now you have neutralized any hostile feelings and can go happily on your way enjoying a day of peace and tranquility.
