If you thought that there was a spelling error with the word “penny” you would be right if it was about money. But this Penney has the letters J.C. ahead of it and refers to one of the leading merchants of the past century.
Still what this Penney has to say about being a people person is surely worth many a penny.
Here are 10 things this accomplished merchant said we should do or develop to become a valued “people person.”
1. Give credit when credit is due.
2. Welcome new ideas and make use of them no matter who presents them.
3. Give others the benefit of the doubt rather than argue.
4. Be diplomatic with everyone even with those with whom you have a personality conflict.
5. Help others whether they reciprocate or not.
6. If you make a wrong decision, accept the blame.
7. Cultivate the art of kindliness.
8. Remember that genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.
9. Consider loyalty and ethical conduct basic to long-term success.
10.The last item on this list is perhaps the most important. It is to be a good listener. Listening is not something that comes naturally. It is an acquired art. Especially it isn’t just a passive activity during which we allow our own unspoken thoughts to intrude upon what someone else is saying. Neither is it just silence while you are waiting for an opportunity to present your own ideas on the subject at hand. Active listening requires willpower, concentration and substantial mental effort. Its rewards are great because only when we listen do we really learn something about the other person–his feelings, hopes, ambitions and what kind of person he really is.
That’s a Penney for your thoughts and if the thoughts are carefully considered and practiced it would seem that they are worth far more than a penny.
